Chapter 20

Jules

This is my year to do it. To finally travel and see a different part of the world. I’m not going to go crazy, maybe San Francisco or New York City. Ooh, or maybe Nashville to catch a few of my favourite singers in concert. Somewhere I can travel by myself and feel safe. A lot of people would say most places are fine for solo travel. Seriously, though, I’m not ready to break the seal on a brand-new passport with a trip to India.

“What’s this?” A very recognisable voice chimes in over my shoulder and flips my book shut. “Nashville, hey?” He scans the tabletop. “Or is it a cross-America trip you’re planning?” I’m at the library and am perusing travel books. “You know, you can find all that info online, and it’s probably more current than,” Badger yanks the book from my hand and flips to the copyright page, “2016.”

“This is preliminary research,” I defend myself. “Besides, it’s too easy to get lost down the rabbit hole of link chasing on the internet. In a book, the information is limited.”

“So, you’re finally going to pop your cherry?” he jokes with me. A week doesn’t go by where we don’t throw that phrase at one another.

Our friendship has resumed its normal course since Badger divulged his past to me. We haven’t spoken about it again because there’s no need. Although, I do look at him in a different light now. I’m not so quick to judge and I most definitely pay attention to how I phrase my questions towards him. As a matter of fact, I do that with everyone now. It would seem we both gained something from that conversation.

Before his revelation, I knew something was going on in the recesses of his mind, although I couldn’t put my finger on it. Now that his history is out in the open, with me at least, he’s even more fun to be around. Badger doesn’t guard his words as he used to and he doesn’t jump to conclusions about what I’m saying and doing anymore.

It also helps that I haven’t tried to set him up with anyone in a while now. I’m not saying it’s off the table forever; I’m just letting the dust settle on the new us before I go stirring shit up again. I’m still optimistic that he’ll find someone to love, and one day, we’ll tell our kids (yes, I’m optimistic that I will find love, too) how he thought I was spying on him and that I tried to set him up with a lesbian.

“I am going to pop my cherry,” I say as convincingly as I can. My nervous giggle doesn’t help.

“I’ll believe it when I see it,” he challenges.

My stomach clenches and I’m filled with enough anxious butterflies to negate the need for an airplane to fly.

“What are you doing here?” I change the subject.

“A little research of my own.” He takes my hand and pulls me along to the photography section.
